Student Feedback and Teaching Effectiveness
Student feedback is an important source of reflection in my teaching and helps me identify both strengths and areas for continued improvement. Selected Survey of Student Learning Experience (SSLE) results across my evaluated courses at The Ohio State University are summarized below. The reported means are weighted across three course sections based on the number of student responses.
| SSLE Item | Overall Mean |
|---|---|
| Available to answer questions and provide help when needed | 4.36/5 |
| Demonstrated genuine interest in teaching | 4.54/5 |
| Students felt welcomed in the course | 4.49/5 |
| Created an environment that valued diverse perspectives and experiences | 4.44/5 |
What My Students Say
Selected student comments include:
Enthusiasm and genuine engagement: “She was super kind and helpful, and very engaging in her teaching practices. She is very well versed with the content and very helpful. You can tell she cares a lot about teaching”; “Dr. Fang was always passionate about her work and always brought a positive attitude to class.”
Clarity and teaching effectiveness: “The structure of the course was very helpful for my learning, especially the consistent organization of lectures and the way each topic built on previous material. Professor Fang explained concepts clearly and provided step-by-step examples that made difficult ideas more approachable. … I especially appreciated the emphasis on conceptual understanding before moving into computations.”
Accessibility and commitment to students: “In such a large class, it is tough to ensure students are following content, but Rui Fang did a good job of trying to get students to participate and learn. She attempted to help students in lecture, but always made herself very available for other help.”
Inclusive and welcoming learning environment: “Instructor was eager to teach us and made me feel comfortable in class.”
